The question we get asked most — at markets, on the phone, in our Umhlali workshop — is some version of: "Why doesn't a Shloomfy go flat like my old bean bag did?"
The answer is what's inside.
No beans. No polystyrene balls.
Despite the name, a Shloomfy "bean bag" contains no beans and no polystyrene. The white EPS balls in ordinary bean bags are mostly air — they crush and compact every time you sit, which is why a cheap bean bag turns into a sad pancake within months and needs endless topping up.
Our foam chip recipe
Since 2013 we've filled every Shloomfy with a specially formulated recipe of foam chips — specific foam types and densities blended for the way a body actually sits. The result:
- It moulds to you. The foam shifts and shapes around your body, supporting your back and neck rather than just sinking.
- It recovers. Climb out, and the Shloomfy puffs back. No flat spots, no refills. Our bags are designed never to go flat — dive into them as often as you like.
- It has real substance. A large Shloomfy weighs 28–30kg. That weight is foam, and foam is support.
Built in layers
Every Shloomfy is two bags in one. The inner bag — strong, breathable, cotton-rich fabric — holds the foam recipe, with its own zip for access. The outer cover zips off completely for machine washing (cold, never tumble dried) or can be swapped for a replacement cover in a new colour or fabric. Premium YKK zips throughout, because zips are always the first thing to fail on cheap bean bags.
