1. The filling matters more than anything else
There are three common fillings in South African bean bags:
- Polystyrene balls (EPS beads): the cheapest option, found in most budget bean bags. They compress with use, which is why cheap bean bags go flat within months and need constant refilling.
- Chipped foam: offcut foam pieces, a big step up. Denser, more supportive, much slower to flatten. Most quality SA manufacturers use some version of this.
- Formulated foam-chip blends: a recipe of specific foam types and densities rather than random offcuts. A bean bag lives on the floor, gets sat on daily, and meets kids, pets, coffee and rusks. If the cover can't come off and go in the washing machine, the bean bag has a short life. Look for:
- A separate outer cover that zips off completely (ours use durable YKK zips)
- An inner bag that keeps the filling contained while the cover is being washed
- Replacement covers sold separately — this lets you refresh the look or fabric years later instead of replacing the whole bean bag
3. Size: bigger than you think
The most common regret is buying too small. As a guide from our range: Small (±90cm wide) suits kids and single loungers; Medium (±120cm) is the adult sweet spot for reading and TV; Large (±160cm) is a genuine alternative to an armchair and fits two at a push. 4. Fabric for South African conditions
- Corduroy: the all-rounder — warm, plush, machine washable. Ideal for living rooms and kids' spaces.

- Velour with stain-guard treatment: built for busy households — spills wipe away before they soak in.
- Velvet: the luxury look for lounges and guest spaces.
- Suede: earthy tones that suit lodges and contemporary homes (dry clean only).
- Waterproof outdoor fabric: essential for patios, pool decks and sunrooms. Standard indoor fabrics fade and perish outside — if it's living on the patio, buy a purpose-made outdoor bean bag.
- Faux fur: maximum cosiness for winter — check the cover is machine washable.
5. Warranty and where it's made
Most quality SA bean bags are locally manufactured — good for lead times, repairs and replacement covers. Check the workmanship guarantee (ours is a full year), and check whether the company actually manufactures or imports: local manufacture usually means you can order replacement covers and custom fabrics years later.
6. What should you pay?
As a rough 2026 guide for quality foam-filled bean bags in SA: small from around R2,300–R3,900, medium R3,200–R5,700, large R4,600–R7,900 depending on fabric. Budget polystyrene bean bags cost less upfront but are usually replaced within a year or two — a quality foam bean bag is a 5–10 year piece of furniture.

Do bean bags go flat? Polystyrene ones do. Properly formulated foam-chip bean bags recover their shape — ours are designed never to go flat.
Are bean bags good for adults? A medium or large foam bean bag supports an adult properly — position it upright for sitting or flatter for reclining.
Can you wash a bean bag? You should be able to. Zip-off covers machine wash cold; never tumble dry.
